本周我们来学习与巧克力相关的词汇


1. bittersweet/ˈbɪtɚˌswiːt/


adj. 又苦又甜的

e.g. I usually go for bittersweet chocolate because it has less sugar and feels a bit healthier.

e.g. My favorite dessert is a bittersweet chocolate cake with a gooey center — it’s rich but not too sweet.

补充:gooey 黏稠的[soft and sticky]

Figurative Context:苦乐交加的

常见搭配: bittersweet memories; moments

e.g. Graduating from university was a bittersweet moment for me—I was excited to start a new chapter, but sad to leave my friends behind.


2. velvety /'velvɪtɪ/


adj. 天鹅绒般的;柔软光滑的

e.g. The hot chocolate was thick and velvety.

e.g. I love the velvety texture of milk chocolate; it just melts in your mouth.

n. velvet 天鹅绒

习语补充:An iron fist in a velvet glove 外表温柔,实则强硬。

e.g. Our teacher is like an iron hand in a velvet glove — she’s always polite and calm, but when it comes to discipline, she does not compromise.


3. crave /kreɪv/


v. 渴望;热望

e.g. Many people crave chocolate during exams or when they’re feeling emotional.

e.g. I often crave chocolate, especially when I’m stressed or tired.

n. craving n. 渴望;迫切需要

搭配:satisfy cravings for 满足对…的渴望

e.g. when I feel tired and emotional, I usually snack on some chocolate to satisfy my cravings.

e.g. When I was studying late at night, I often ordered dessert just to satisfy my cravings.


4. indulgent /ɪn'dʌldʒ(ə)nt/


adj.形容食物或体验、放纵的、奢华的、让人沉迷的

搭配:indulgent dessert; treat 放纵小点心

e.g. I enjoy having an indulgent dessert on weekends.

e.g. Although I usually eat healthily, I sometimes treat myself to something indulgent like a rich chocolate mousse.

v. indulge (使自己)沉迷;放纵(自己);

搭配:indulge oneself in …沉迷于…

e.g. Only rarely will she indulge in a triple-layer chocolate cake.

e.g. It's my birthday. I'm going to indulge.


5. chocoholic /ˌtʃɑːkəˈhɑːlɪk/


n. 吃巧克力有瘾的人;嗜食巧克力的人

e.g. I’m a bit of a chocoholic, so I can never resist eating a bar of chocolate after dinner.

e.g. You could say I’m a chocolate lover or even a chocoholic – I can’t get enough of sweets!

近义补充:a chocolate lover 喜欢吃巧克力的人

have a sweet tooth 喜欢吃甜食

e.g. To be honest, I don’t really have a sweet tooth. Sweet foods like chocolate and cake are a bit too fattening for me, so I try to avoid them.
