Qu Yuan was a minister of King Huai of Chu during the Spring and Autumn Period. He advocated for the promotion of virtuous and capable individuals, the enrichment of the country and the strengthening of the military, and strongly advocated for the alliance with Qi to resist Qin. However, he was strongly opposed by Zu Zilan and others. Qu Yuan was slandered and dismissed from his position, driven out of the capital, and exiled to the Yuan and Xiang River basins. In 278 BC, the Qin army captured the capital of the State of Chu. Qu Yuan, seeing his motherland being invaded, felt as if his heart was being torn apart. However, he could never bear to abandon his country. On the fifth day of the fifth lunar month, after writing his last work, "Huai Sha", he threw himself into the Miluo River with a stone in his arms and died. There are many origins and legends about the Dragon Boat Festival: some commemorate Wu Zixu, some commemorate the filial daughter Cao E, and some commemorate the totem festival of the ancient Moon tribe.
After Qu Yuan's death, the people of the State of Chu were in deep sorrow. A fisherman took out the food prepared for Qu Yuan and threw it into the river with a "plop, plop" sound, saying that he wanted the fish to be full and not come to eat Qu Yuan. Dragon boat racing is the main custom of the Dragon Boat Festival. The people of Chu were reluctant to part with Qu Yuan and rowed boats to chase and rescue him. When chasing to Dongting Lake, there was no trace left.
